The Samsung Galaxy range of smartphones has taken a bit of a beating over the last couple of years. Its lacklustre S5 model failed to keep up the increasing competition at the top end of the smartphone market. It was, therefore, essential that Samsung got the S6 right.
Here’s our take on the S6, which is already proving popular with our business mobile clients.
Design and Build Quality
Premium smartphones are not cheap, and our customers tell us that they want a mobile phone that looks the business as well as being functional. If this is you, you’ll be pleased to read that, with the S6, Samsung has finally grown out of their preference for plastic, in favour of an aluminium and glass construction. This is a slim sleek and stylish phone that oozes quality in terms of design and build.
Stunning Screen
The Galaxy S6 features a 5.1 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a class leading pixel density of 577 pixels per inch. This play is more than enough to display text, pictures and movies in stunning detail and, unlike some smartphones, offers excellent readability outdoors.
Superb Call Quality
We have been impressed with the new S6’s call quality. The Korean manufacturer has created a phone that offers excellent signal strength and crystal clear call quality, a must for busy business users. WiFi calling is another feature of the Samsung Galaxy S6 that it likely to prove popular with business customers. It offers the ability to route calls via Wi-Fi in low signal areas. For more information on Wi-Fi calling, see our earlier post.
Quality Camera
Many more people now rely on their camera phone for capturing pictures and movies at work as well as at home and on holiday. If this is you, then you’ll love the Galaxy S6’s sixteen-megapixel rear facing camera that features high-quality optics coupled with a more user-friendly camera interface. This means better, faster pictures. The Galaxy S6 also comes with a front facing 5MP camera that’s perfect for selfies and video calling.
A Fingerprint Scanner That Works
One major criticism of the previous S5 model was the less than impressive fingerprint scanner. It did not come close to the simplicity and reliability of the iPhone. Again, Samsung has listened and rectified the problems. The S6’s fingerprint scanner is every bit as good as the iPhone and is a pleasure to use.
Battery Life and Charging
One of the few criticisms levelled against the S6 has been the fact that it has sacrificed battery capacity in return for a flatter design. While this is factually correct, we think that the 2% reduction is less of a problem in practice. Samsung have equipped the Galaxy S6 with ultra-fast charging, which means that a fifteen-minute boost will get you back up to 35% charge while 100% takes just 80 minutes! You can also charge the S6 Wirelessly, and it is compatible with both the Qi and PMA charging standards.
Storage Capacity
Like Apple, Samsung has ditched the SD card slot in favour of a fixed on-board memory and is offering the Galaxy S6 with a range of internal storage starting at 32GB and going up to a whopping 128GB.
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is without doubt a significant step forward and addresses most of the concerns and criticisms of its predecessor. It is better looking, better built, easier to use and has a better camera than the S5. If you are looking for a top of the range Android smartphone that is practical and stylish, then the Galaxy S6 must surely feature on your shortlist
