What is FTTP?
Fibre to the premises or FTTP is pure fibre-optic connection running from your local exchange directly to the users business or home. Instead of using cheap copper-based cables FTTP uses optical fibre. Using a single laser they can transmit billions of bits per second. So, basically, it’s the newest, super fast broadband! It offers speeds of up to 1gbps.
FTTP vs FTTC
Now, both FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) and FTTP promise high speeds. However, the complete fibre-optic connection of FTTP allows for much higher speeds than FTTC. While FTTC connections offer up to 76mb/s, the FTTP option can reach up to 1000mb/s. Learn more here.
What other perks?
So, it’s super fast, what else? Speed is important but the insanely high speeds offered by fibre to the premises aren’t necessary for everyone. However, there are a variety of reasons to choose FTTP, let’s have a look at some of the perks:
Future Proof
FTTP was designed to be easily expanded and improved upon so that bandwidth has more room for growth. This allows businesses to change their speed on demand.
Resistant to Electromagnetic Interferences
Normally cables can be interfered with by industrial sources e.g. heating, power, ventilation, etc. Fibre-optic cables are extremely resistant to electromagnetic interference. Not only is FTTP more resistant but it’s also a much more reliable source of web connection. This is because instead of using a current it uses light technology.
Tough Cables
Fibre-optic is much tougher and more durable than copper-based cables. This means less downtime! There won’t be many repairs needed and very little maintenance. The fibre-optic material can last up to an astounding 40 years! While copper-based cables need updating once every 5 years just to remain operational.
