Change up your password!

It goes without saying that your phone system needs to be password protected. Have you changed your password from the default? If you haven’t already changed your password now is the time! Why? Because by using the default password you leave your phone system open to attack. Have you heard of the Mirai Botnet DDoS Attack? It could’ve been prevented by simply changing the password from the default.

So what can we learn from this? It’s important to change your password from the default, we would also suggest changing your passwords on a regular basis. As a rule of thumb, use a minimum of six digits and use different cases, numbers and special characters.

Firewalls

One of the best ways to protect your VoIP system is to ensure the computers and other equipment used to access your VoIP system are secure. The most effective way to secure your system is to set up a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) firewall. In a nutshell, a SIP-based firewall can inspect a voice packet as it passes through your network and filters out any suspicious looking traffic.

Encryption

Encryption has become one of the most important tools for keeping data safe online. Why is it important? Without encryption, your voice calls can be vulnerable to interference at multiple points by various entities. Some may be harmless customer service calls or sales calls. However, many phone calls contain confidential information which is easily available to anyone with technical know-how, access (legal or not) and the right equipment.

By encrypting your calls you make interference pointless. Without the decryption key, the data is gibberish.
